MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
To lead the health information management function to ensure sound information governance structures are established and adhered to, and that clinical terminology schemas implemented are aligned to national best practice and standards. This role will be responsible for data management, coding training, documentation improvement and auditing and demands close collaboration with broader internal teams to support the operational and digital transformation needs of the organisation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
- Establish and maintain structures to ensure the integrity, standardisation, confidentiality, and security of patient health data in line with relevant industry and legislative rules, standards and frameworks.
- Manage the organisational update, change, and alignment of clinical coding and documentation with relevant terminology standards (e.g., ICD, CPT, and LOINC).
- Lead and manage the Health Information team, driving performance, staff development and promoting effective inter-departmental and cross-functional collaboration
- Design, implement, and oversee internal audits of health information, clinical coding and health record documentation to assure and improve quality and compliance.
- Deliver actionable health information insights to management, informatics and clinical teams; develop dashboards and reporting tools.
- Drive continuous improvement in health information practices and support strategic digital health and innovation initiatives.
- Develop and oversee organisational coding or other clinical terminology training to ensure extended organisational teams and the health information team maintain current knowledge of coding schemas, guidelines, rules and regulations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION: MB ChB or similar medical degree; Medical specialist qualification.
DESIRED EDUCATION: Post graduate diplomas in healthcare or management. Master’s degree in any related field e.g. MBA, public health, patient safety qualification.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- 7–10 years in a health information, health informatics or health data leadership role
- 3–5 years in a leadership or managerial capacity
- Demonstrated expertise in clinical terminology schemas (e.g. ICD, Snomed CT, CPT, Loinc) and their application in health information systems
- Experience with clinical groupers and/or crosswalk development
- Experience in structuring and managing data from digital health platforms and /or EHR systems
DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in private healthcare, including exposure to reimbursement models and reporting frameworks
- Cross-functional leadership and implementation experience across clinical, data, IT and operational teams
- Experience in population health management, AI/ML and/or predictive analytics
REQUIRED JOB SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Health Information Systems (HIS) composition and management. Including knowledge of data warehouses, EHRs, and clinical registries
- Data quality assurance, master data and metadata management
- Clinical Terminology Schemas and vocabularies (e.g. ICD-10, SNOMEDCT, LOINC)
- Health Data Governance (e.g. HIPAA, POPIA, GDPR, etc.)
- Health Information Audit Processes
- Clinical Documentation management and improvement methodologies
- Leadership & Team Building
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills
